The small and cozy mountain town Jakoruda (the birth place of my grand-mother, nowadays with some 5.600 inhabitants) is located at the feet of mountain Rila. I have spent many weeks in my summer vacations here, at the birth house of my grand-mother, enjoying the green landscapes, the fresh air, the singing birds and the coziness of this hidden gem...
Every Saturday a colourful market takes place. Fruits, veggies, food and tools are available. People are like busy bees, greeting and talking to eachother, checking the different stands and living the market with hand full with bags...End of July and the watermelons and honeymelons were again there, I had some there were simply amazing. I also got one jar of honey, some fresh tomatoes, and, and....:-)).
The two pictures below are from the birth house of my grand-mother...

Hello Jana,
How wonderful that you are visiting the birth home of your grandmother. I love your photos...the colors are beautiful! :)
Really interested to see these photos of Bulgaria a place I visited over 30 years ago. I presume that your Grandmother's house is still belongs to the family and that is where you stayed for your vacation.
Isnt it so much fun visiting the place of your roots.?? Lovely photos Jana
Thanks for sharing a part of your family life with us! Nothing can change the feeling of being back home :-) Enjoy! Xx
Hello Jana,
What great to see the life on the street there. So nice with all the merchandise on the market.
Greetings, Marco
Thank you for showing me this part of the world which I am not familiar with.
Great, yellow and green water melons next to each other. I am surprised to see so many women with a scarf.
Greetings,
Filip
Such colorful marketplace photos from Bulgaria, Jana. You show the ambiance and charm of the place.
Jakorda looks lovely town. I’d like to stroll around the Saturday market in person and buy some fruits, vegetables, and jar of honey. Women’s ethnic clothes is charming. I wonder your grandmother used to wear that?

In de dorpen kan je altijd zo veel zien, bijzonder als er ook een markt is. Ik geniet Jana. Fijn weekend, Dietmut
dear all, thank you for the lovely comments;
@Filip: the scarfs on the head of these women is sign for their muslim religion; that is their way to show it; in this area of Bulgaria (the Southeast) you have Bulgarian orthodox and Bulgarian muslims;
I will put a short explanation under one of the pictures.
@Yoko:see my answer to Filip; my grand mother does not wear it;
It looks much like our markets here in France. I love them and could spend hours walking around but then I must leave my husband at home as he hates it! Have a good day Diane
Seems like a very lovely town [ with lovely weather you got there ]. If you don't mind me asking is it a culture for the ladies to wear head scarf there?
Looks like there is quite a mix of cultures and traditions in this area still. Must have been quite an experience to visit.
love love those veggies Jana, the colors are so wonderful.
